Tomorrow Uruguayans will elect their next president between the ruling Álvaro Delgado and the opposition Yamandú Orsi, in addition to renewing the Parliament. If neither candidate achieves 50 percent of the votes, there will be a runoff in November.
For the ruling party, led by President Luis Lacalle Pou, Álvaro Delgado, a lawyer from the National Party with experience as a deputy and senator, is running. Delgado has been a close collaborator of Lacalle Pou and has served as secretary of the presidency for the past four years. In his campaign closing, Delgado emphasized the importance of "ensuring continuity" and highlighted that the other option would be to return to a negative past.
As for the opposition, the Broad Front presents Yamandú Orsi, a history teacher and former mayor of Canelones, accompanied by Carolina Cosse, former mayor of Montevideo. This ticket has the most support in polls and is backed by former president José "Pepe" Mujica. In his campaign closing, Orsi expressed his desire to make transformations and continue building the future on the solid foundations left by the current government.
For his part, Andrés Ojeda from the Colorado Party shows alignment with some aspects of Argentine President Javier Milei. All candidates closed their campaigns last Tuesday and are awaiting the election results to learn who will lead the country for the next four years.
