Uruguayans Abroad Mobilize for Presidential Vote

With the Uruguayan law prohibiting voting from abroad, many will travel back home for the presidential elections. Major parties invite residents to return and help transform the country, offering discounted travel options.

Uruguayans Abroad Mobilize for Presidential Vote

Legislation in Uruguay does not allow citizens living abroad to vote at consulates, which has led many to plan a trip to participate in the presidential elections on Sunday. The main political parties - Leftist Broad Front, National Party, and Colorado Party - are encouraging Uruguayans abroad to return to the country by ship, car, bus, or plane to exercise their right to vote.

One of the candidates from the Broad Front, Yamandú Orsi, has promoted voter mobilization with a message in a brochure: 'We help you go vote, so you can help transform the country.' Additionally, discounted tickets have been offered through various channels, such as the Centenary Committee CABA Argentina and FA For Uruguay, which have promoted the initiative on Facebook.

In the 2019 elections, around 2,000 Uruguayans were mobilized using various means of transportation to reach their polling stations, according to Newsweek Argentina. This dynamic reflects the importance that political parties and the citizens themselves place on electoral participation and the exercise of democracy in Uruguay.
