Uruguay Prepares for Presidential Elections

This Sunday, Uruguayans head to the polls for presidential elections. Progressive candidate Yamandú Orsi leads in the polls but may require a runoff due to insufficient majority support. The official Partido Nacional candidate, Álvaro Delgado, faces decreasing popularity. A complex political landscape emerges as the elections approach.

Uruguay Prepares for Presidential Elections

In the upcoming presidential elections in Uruguay, the candidate of the Broad Front, Yamandú Orsi, leads the polls with a significant advantage, but not enough to avoid a runoff. Orsi is a prominent member of the Popular Participation Movement and has served as the head of government of Canelones. His vice-presidential candidate is Carolina Cosse. The Broad Front is projected to receive about 45% of the votes.

On the other hand, the National Party finds itself in a complicated situation, with Álvaro Delgado as the candidate following the prohibition of direct re-election for President Luis Lacalle Pou. The party has seen its popularity decrease in recent months, dropping from 30% to 20% in the polls. A controversy surrounded former leader Pablo Iturralde, who had to resign due to alleged pressures on prosecutors in a corruption case.

The Colorado Party, for its part, has experienced growth in the polls with the presidential ticket of Andrés Ojeda and Robert Silva. Despite reaching 15% in the latest polls, they still trail behind the National Party. Some surveys place them at 20% of the votes, but so far they have not surpassed the whites.
