Montevideo to Host 2026 Copa Libertadores Final

The president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, confirmed that the 2026 Copa Libertadores final will be held in Montevideo. This will be a repeat of the 2021 final, where Palmeiras faced Flamengo at the Centenario Stadium. Domínguez made the announcement in an interview with ESPN, without specifying which stadium will host the match. Last year's final was held in Lima, Peru. Montevideo has hosted Libertadores finals before. In 1960, the first final was played there between Peñarol and Olimpia. Subsequently, the Uruguayan capital was repeatedly the venue for decisive matches involving Uruguayan and Argentine teams. CONMEBOL also announced that three countries have bid to host the 2027 final: Argentina (La Plata), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and Brasília), and Paraguay (Asunción). Argentina will have seven guaranteed spots in the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores. Lanús, as the 2025 South American Cup champion, Platense, as the 2025 Apertura champion, the 2025 Clausura champion, Independiente Rivadavia, as the 2025 Copa Argentina champion, Rosario Central, as the top team in the 2025 annual standings, Boca Juniors, as the second-place team in the annual standings, and the team that finished third in the annual standings. Argentinos Juniors secured a top-3 spot in the annual standings. 'Now the selection process must be carried out,' the official stated. Domínguez made these remarks before the final held in Lima on Saturday, where Flamengo took revenge on Palmeiras (1-0) to become Brazil's first four-time champion.
