Yamandú Orsi, 57 years old, has had a life marked by deep contact with people and a political commitment that has taken him from his childhood in a neighborhood store to the elected presidency of Uruguay. Born on June 13, 1967, in Canelones, Orsi is the son of a rural worker and a seamstress, and grew up among the modest buildings of the countryside.
Orsi lived in a family store in the departmental capital of Canelones, where he experienced daily life, interactions with neighbors, and the challenges of shopping at dawn in the market. He studied in public schools and high schools, joined the left in the 1980s, and trained as a history teacher, a role he held in the area where he grew up.
In 2015, he was elected mayor of Canelones, a position he was re-elected to in 2020 with 51 percent of the votes. Orsi is married for the second time, has twins, and declares himself a fan of the soccer team Peñarol. He is agnostic and has chosen not to reside in the official presidential residence, opting to stay in his home in Salinas.
With a political style characterized by dialogue and closeness to the people, Orsi has been described by his colleagues as an intelligent and sensitive leader. His upcoming term as president, alongside Carolina Cosse as vice president, aims to promote growth with equality and development for greater prosperity in Uruguay.
Orsi, a member of the Popular Participation Movement led by José Mujica, won the presidential nomination in 2024 and prevailed in the elections of November of the same year. His political trajectory, marked by proximity to the people and the ability to engage in dialogue, has led him to achieve the presidency, promising to work for the unity and well-being of all Uruguayans.
