Yamandú Orsi, candidate of the Broad Front (FA), is a former History teacher who taught in public high schools before being called by the party in 2005. He initially held the position of general secretary of the Canelones mayor's office, the second most populated department in Uruguay, which has a significant agricultural and industrial production. In 2015, he was elected mayor and in 2020 he was reelected with 51% of the votes.
Orsi, 57 years old, is married to Laura and is the father of two children. His political career mainly unfolds within the Movement of Popular Participation of the FA, led by José Mujica. He resigned from the mayor's office in 2024 to run as a presidential candidate, being elected after the party's internal elections.
His childhood took place in a humble environment in Canelones, where his father owned a store. This early experience allowed him to connect with the reality of the people and to be recognized as a leader capable of articulating and dialoguing. Orsi highlights the importance of returning to power to be on the side of the people.
The presidential candidate has expressed his commitment to seeking agreements and expanding spaces for dialogue as fundamental premises of his management. With electoral support above 40%, according to polls, Orsi is a favorite in a potential runoff against the candidate of the ruling coalition.
The FA aims to regain the government it held between 2005 and 2020, under the mandates of Tabaré Vázquez and José Mujica. Orsi presents himself as a leader who embodies a way of managing public affairs from the left, seeking the well-being of the people without renouncing coordination.
Since his early years in Canelones, Yamandú Orsi has forged his path in Uruguayan politics, reflecting in his speeches and actions the struggle for a fairer and more inclusive society.
