The elected president of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front (FA), will take office on March 1 in a ceremony to be held in two iconic locations in Montevideo. The presidential garment, made of silk and adorned with gold and silver threads, will be worn by Orsi during his oath at the iconic Legislative Palace, an impressive neoclassical building that celebrates a century of existence this year.

Subsequently, the elected president will receive the presidential sash at Independence Square, a central space in the Uruguayan capital known for the equestrian statue of the national hero José Artigas. During the journey between both locations, Orsi will use an electric car in a symbolic gesture towards environmental protection and the promotion of energy transformation, according to the relevant authorities.

Since 1835, the date for presidential inauguration in Uruguay has been set on March 1, a selection motivated by the end of the harvest and the possibility for the population to approach the capital to witness the ceremony. The presidential sash, the highest symbol of the president at their inauguration, is a garment commissioned and funded by the family or close associates of the future leader, and is handed over by the outgoing president in a traditional gesture.
