The new president of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi, and the vice president Carolina Cosse, paraded through the streets of Montevideo aboard an electric vehicle after their inauguration at the Legislative Palace. Accompanied by thousands of people along Avenida Libertador, they headed towards Plaza Independencia for the next part of the ceremony.

During the journey, they decided to stop and get out of the vehicle to greet the members of Mothers and Relatives of Uruguayan Detained Disappeared. Orsi recalled during his speech at the General Assembly that it has been 40 years since the recovery of democracy, highlighting that Uruguay has experienced the longest period of democratic life in its history.

The Secretary of the Presidency, Alejandro Sánchez, mentioned that Uruguay has become a leader in energy transformation and environmental care, with nearly 95% of energy generated from renewable sources. In the year 2024, 9% of the vehicles sold in Uruguay were electric, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year.

Orsi expressed his pride in being able to celebrate this milestone not only before his compatriots but also in front of leaders from around the world. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the commitment to freedom, truth, and justice, acknowledging that in Uruguay there are still legacies of the past that need to be addressed.

The Uruguayan government wanted to send a message of new times with the choice of an electric vehicle for this journey, highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability and the modernization of its infrastructure.
