On Sunday, November 24, a second electoral round will take place in Uruguay if no candidate achieves an absolute majority. This election will determine who will be the president and how the Parliament will be composed for the period 2025-2030. Citizens will be able to choose the members of the Chamber of Senators and Deputies, as well as the Vice President of the Republic.
In addition to the election of authorities, voters will express their opinion on two referendums. One of them, promoted by the PIT-CNT and social groups, seeks to modify the country's social security system, including aspects such as the equalization of pensions and retirements to the national minimum wage. The other referendum seeks to authorize nighttime raids, currently prohibited by the Constitution.
High participation is expected on Sunday, with 2.7 million citizens eligible to vote. Eleven political parties are competing for the presidency, and the winner must exceed 50% of valid votes to assume the presidency. The electoral ban prohibits the holding of campaign propaganda acts from the Friday prior to the election. The sale of alcoholic beverages is also prohibited on voting day.
Once the polls close, the first projections of results are expected around 9:30 PM local time. Candidates will await the results in different locations across the country, while certain areas in Montevideo have been designated for celebration by different political forces.
